Interferential Current Therapy
Interferential Current Therapy (IFC) is an effective modality
used by our doctors at Desert Physical Medicine to relieve
pain and accelerate the body’s healing process. This
treatment helps return your body to a healthy, pain-free state
by targeting deep tissue pain receptors.
IFC uses a combination of high-frequency and low-frequency electric currents that are mixed to produce an interrupted frequency. When applied to the affected area, this interrupted frequency shuts off pain receptors located deep within the skin, muscle, and bone tissue.
Most patients experience an electrical anesthesia effect Within 10 to 15 minutes of treatment, relief lasting several hours or even days. Additionally, IFC stimulates the release of endorphins and enkephalins, which promote a relaxed, euphoric state. It also helps reduce soft tissue or joint swelling (edema) through a lymphatic pumping action. An added benefit of IFC is the absence of side effects, making it a favorable alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that can irritate the stomach and intestinal lining.

Once our healthcare team confirms the cause of your pain, IFC is typically administered as part of a combined therapy regimen. Sessions generally last 20 to 30 minutes and are scheduled either daily or divided into two to three treatments per week for four to Six weeks. For patients requiring daily use, our doctors may prescribe a portable IFC unit for home use.
